Our garden has been flourishing so far this month… that was until the dreaded hosepipe ban came in. We are allowed to water our food crops and that is all. It’s super frustrating watching our clover lawn brown off while our visiting bees are foraging around trying to find a flower that is still holding some goodies, but we are watering what we can.
The starlings are having a hard time foraging for ground bugs so we are increasing our food supplies, as starlings — as well as the house sparrows that regularly visit — are on the RSPB Red List (which we learnt about during our Birds Biodiversity unit this summer). We have also begun to put out cooler treats for the birds, such as grapes and watermelon.
Our carrots, while stumpy, have been delicious and fun to harvest and our corn has now begun its fertilisation stage! Next year we will put carrots much deeper and give our lettuces more space. We also bought a new mini greenhouse to grow some seeds and they are sprouting nicely in the warm weather.
